About Us
Making a Difference
DEL MAR VIRTUOSO MUSIC SCHOOL provides an enriched learning environment that has helped countless students get ahead. Founded in 2004, the school is located in Brunei Darussalam and Corpus Christi Texas U.S.A. and reflects the diverse backgrounds and cultures of the area. We have over 300 students and music staffs eager to learn, create and grow together.
The student experience at DEL MAR VIRTUOSO MUSIC SCHOOL includes a diverse range of cultures, curricula, and extracurricular activities. We offer many options for our students to choose from, making them directly involved in designing their own educational path which meets the high standards of our core curriculum. There’s so much for students to do and experience here.
We are music educators with 45 years of teaching experience amongst us. Typically our clients range from ages 6 and above, who have the challenge of mastering the art of playing the Pianoforte, singing in various styles/genre and achieving outstanding examination achievement in IGCSE (The International General Certificate of Secondary Education) and/or IB (International Baccalaureate) Music portfolios such as theory, performance, composition and score analysis. We help them achieve outstanding results on their music examinations by utilising extensive strategies that equip students for success from the beginner till diploma levels. By combining a well-balanced selection of assessments from ABRSM (The Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music), Trinity College London, IGCSE and IB, our students enjoy a well-rounded music learning experience, feeling of completion, nurturing love in learning these skills and freedom to connect oneself to the joy of music.

MKM Live Charity Performance 2020

Graduate students Ms Maya Prabhakaran and Fakhrul Razi performing for:
The Community Welfare Council, MKM, a local NGO's and held the MKM Live Charity Performance on the 4th January night. It took place Jerudong Park Amphitheatre.
Present were Pengiran Haji Mohd Hasnan bin Pengiran Haji Ali Hassan, Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports and Doctor Siti Norkhalbi binti Haji Wahsalfelah, Deputy Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports. The live performance showcased a number of local artists, aiming to collect donations to repair a house that belongs to Dayang Jamping binti Haji Shawal, a client of MKM in Kampung Madang. Apart from that, the proceeds will also be used to finance projects and charities conducted by MKM for the country's needy.

In Philippines, Ms Marieta Eugenia B. Del Mar has been teaching since her second undergraduate year at university. She secured and maintained a full scholarship grant from her second undergraduate year until she graduated in 1997. A full-time Music Teacher at International School Berakas with specialization in composition, IGCSE and IB Music from 2005 - 2012, Mrs Del Mar Tsen is also an accompanist for the Serunai Singers, the Mabohai Club Ballet for Royal Academy of Dance, Enpointe Academy of Dance, Studio scene Ballet examinations, Brunei Music Society, Annual violin music examinations of Mr Alberto Leonor and accompanist for trinity music examinations for Jerudong International School from year 2012 up to the present. In Brunei, Ms Lady Sha Sha Cuadra has been part of Seeds Brunei since 2011. She started out as a seedling (student participant) contributing as a musician in their annual year production from 2012 up to 2018's recent production, The Corny Collin's Show. She has since become the music coach in the organisation, contributing and assisting the cast and technical crew with the music needed in each yearly production.
She has also recently participated in the Asian Youth Theatre Festival in November 2018 representing Brunei, contributing her expertise in composing an original song and script for their performance. Currently, she is preparing a performance with TheCreativeCorebn for their upcoming event, The Voices of the Untold on the 6th of March. Follow their IG for more information!

For the past year I have been studying to complete grade 8 voice. I throughly enjoyed my lessons. One problem I did face was learning a different language. But thanks to my amazing teacher I was able to sing in Italian and French even if there were still some minor faults. From the experience I learnt that like other instruments voice is jut as hard, I may say even harder, but to be able to sing infront of an examiner and enjoy the experience was great. I have gained a lot of knowledge from my lessons and by having ms Marieta del Mar as a teacher it has been even better. For future students I would recommend doing more sight singing as this was the most challenging part of my exam and the only bit I did not enjoy. Over all it was an amazing experience and I enjoyed both learning the songs but also performing them in the exam.

I just had the Grade 6 Trinity exams for both Saxophone and Recorder. It was hard for me as I have only learnt Saxophone for less than a year and I skipped from Grade 3 to Grade 6. I had difficulties in counting & getting the correct rhythm for both instruments. Nonetheless, I overcome some challenging notes that I had trouble with before. I had to experience late nights as practicing 2 instruments for Grade 6 takes a long time and I am in a sports competition called FOBISIA where some training times can go up to 5:00pm. I think that my accompanist ( Ms Marieta del Mar ) and I have a fabulous relationship. I will strongly recommend Ms Marieta as an accompanist as she gives me plenty of helpful advices. Also, she is extremely supportive and she will improvise and cover me if I make a mistake in my playing.

My name is Alvina Hee and I am currently waiting for my Grade 8 piano exam results. Overall, taking up piano lessons is the best decision I have ever made. Yes, there were days of frustration and on the verge of giving up, especially when progress is slow. However, these are all part of the learning process. Throughout 9 years of piano lessons, I have learnt the importance of self-discipline, patience and perseverance, which has benefitted me in so many ways. I have slowly learnt to overcome procrastination and develop time management skills through piano practice at home. Besides, piano lessons have expanded my horizons through exposure to different music genres with different styles of playing. I am very glad to have an excellent teacher who brings the best out of her students through her guidance, impressive illustrations and after-lesson-talks about life. Through the strict guidance of my teacher Ms Marieta Del Mar, I am pushed past my limits, doing things I never knew I could do. With this, I would highly recommend other students to embark on this life changing journey of learning piano.

This award ceremony was officiated by our King, His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu'izzaddin Waddaulah ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar Ali Saifuddien Sa'adul Khairi Waddien Sultan and Yang di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam and wife - Her Majesty Raja Isteri Pengiran Anak Hajah Saleha binti Al-Marhum.

1. Champion of Sarawak 2019 "Let your dreams Fly 2019" total of over 100 participants for Sarawak
2. Champion of the CHMS Alumni Association Chinese Singing Competition 2019 - B$800 prize and Trophy
3. Competing for Malaysia "Let Your dreams fly 2019" representing Sarawak.She will be competing for the winners of all the 15 Capital and federal states of Malaysia (Johor, Alor Setia, Kota bahru, Malacca, Seramban, Sarawak, Kuantan, George Town, Ipoh, Kangar, KK, Kuching, Shah Alam and Kuala Terengganu ) to be held at Alor Setia, Penang, Malaysia.
winners will be competing for the Main title as Grand Champion of Malaysia 2019. Each winners will compete for 3 knock-out Round using 3 difficult competition pieces played by live band.

ms christy joseph accepted to take bachelor of music, major in pianoforte studies at university of chicago
Congratulations to our very own grade VIII graduate, Christy Joseph for making it at University of Chicago, major in Piano. She will be leaving this August to pursue her studies. She completed grade 8 in November 2018. Shortly after, we were busy preparing for her audition in March. 2019. As a foreigner in Brunei, she would only have a keyboard to practice, which is short of the complete octaves found in the usual piano. At times, she would come to my residence and / or our school to practice, and this didn't stop her from pursuing her dreams of finishing grade 8 and pursue music as her chosen career. She is an addition to our growing students who pursued music as a career and will be our very first Srilankan piano teacher in the making! During her study of pianoforte, she was serving as a keyboardist at one of the registered churches here in Brunei. I am so proud of you!

The Lyric Opera Competition at School of the Arts Singapore Nov 2018
THE 5TH HONGKONG INTERNATIONAL MUSIC COMPETITION AUG 2018
Double CONGRATULATIONS to our student entry Zoe Chan Zhi Yi, for placing 3rd in the recent Singapore LYRIC Opera competition held at SOTA - School of the Arts Singapore concert hall, November 2018. This event was joined by various contestant around South East Asia.
She also participated in the finals of the Hong Kong International Music Festival in August 2018 for children woodwinds category. This is another addition to her numerous winnings.
During this event, There is no declared champion and hers is the highest award given. She has received a Medal, Certificate and cash prize.
This competition attracted more than 80,000 competitors in various divisions in preliminary rounds around the world and narrowed down to some 4000 participants for the final round in Hong Kong August 22-27, 2018.
Zoe will be sitting for her grade VII Voice examinations and grade V Pianoforte under Trinity London Exam board at DEL MAR Virtuoso Music School Kiulap, this week. She is under the tutelage of Ms. Marieta Eugenia Del Mar. We wish you the best, Zoe. Way to go!

CONGRATULATIONS to our very own student - Kathrina Ang. She participated in the finals of the Hong Kong International Music Festival last week. In her first ever competition, she competed in the Vocal Primary Level (Classical), the Children (8-10 yrs) Pop Voice and the Children (8-10yrs) Violin.
Though under the weather during this event she was a Platinum Sixth Place Winner in the Vocal Classical category and received an Outstanding Gold Award medal for Pop Voice and an Excellent Silver Award for Violin.
This competition attracted more than 80,000 competitors in various divisions in preliminary rounds around the world and narrowed down to some 4000 participants for the final round in Hong Kong August 22-27, 2018.
It was indeed memorable to be able to witness and learn from the calibre of talent on show at this competition.
Congratulations as well to her violin teacher Melissa Robbins for her continued support and commitment in making Kathrina a better musician. #teacherproudmoments

Her big breakthrough came after she won as the Grand Champion in the ‘Asian Pop Music Festival Contest’ held during the Majesty’s King of Brunei’s birthday which was organized by The Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports. The event was held in the capital of Negara Brunei Darussalam in 2005.
Along with that, came other international and national awards. To name a few, Bridget was tagged as the Kristal Kids Idol of 2008, Artist Choice Award of Brunei in 2007. Recently, Bridget has expanded her skills to compete in other countries as well. Her biggest achievement was in the year 2014 where she won 2 silver medals in The World Championship Of Performing Arts (WCOPA) for Pop and Original Composition which was held in Los Angeles, California, USA where she represented Brunei.She was trained by one of the country’s best national vocal coach, Ms Marieta Del Mar. And in 2015, she was one of the semi-finalist for the Trinity Rock & Pop Soul Competition held at Ho Chi Minh, Vietnam.

Dorset festival 2018
Huge congratulations to our very own, Maya Prabhakaran -chosen to be part of this prestigious chorus by audition for Dorset Opera’s professional production of La bohème and Le Cid as part of the Dorset 2018 Festival.Under the tutelege of her Voice teacher, Ms Marieta Del Mar, she auditioned Batti Batti, O Bel Masetto, an aria from the opera "Don Giovanni" by W. A. Mozart. These selected chorus members have performed alongside international opera singers, in a fully staged and costumed production, with orchestra and sung in Italian and French at the Coade Hall, Bryanston Theatre.

For 44 years, Dorset Opera has been successfully introducing opera to youngsters of all ages, through what has been termed ‘The world’s foremost residential opera summer school’.this
bring together soloists of international repute, a full professional orchestra, highly-acclaimed conductors and directors, with a mostly amateur chorus, technical crew and wardrobe department.Over the past few years Dorset festival has welcomed participants from Australia, Austria, Belgium, Canada, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Malaysia, Malta, Mexico, the Netherlands, Norway, Oman, the Philippines, Singapore, Spain, Switzerland, the USA, the United Kingdom and Brunei being its first, this year.

Zoe Kae Chan is a 12 year old singer and actress. She will be singing as a grand finalist for the 5th Hongkong International Music Competition. She has sung at various occasions such as an ASEAN meet in 2014, The Sultan of Brunei’s Chinese New Year Celebration 3 times, and others. She has sung at various occasions such as Relentless musicals, Royal family events, The Jerudong International school showcase and musicals; and her scheduled weekly singing appearance at The Empire Hotel Lobby entertaining visitors touring in Brunei. Kathrina has recently completed her grade V Trinity College of Music examinations in May 2018 attaining a Distinction grade.
